Frequently Asked Questions about Brazilian Jiu-jitsu

What is Brazilian Jiu-jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is a unique martial art with a strong emphasis on grappling and ground fighting. Submission holds like chokes, arm locks, and leg locks are the preferred tactics.

What is the the difference between Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and Japanese style Jujutsu?

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu offers more ground grappling techniques than the traditional Jujutsu styles from Japan, specializing in submissions and strikes while on the ground. The original art from Japan is more of a basic, self-defense style with primarily standing techniques.

What is the difference between Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, Gracie Jiu-jitsu and Machado Jiu-jitsu?

These terms are virtually synonomous. They all originated from the Gracie Family system in Brazil, dating back to about 1925. Each modern school of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu however, takes a slightly different approach to this remarkable martial art.

Who is qualified to teach Brazilian Jiu-jitsu?

Ask anyone who claims to teach Brazilian Jiu-jitsu whom they received their instruction and rank from and if they are certified by the International BJJ Federation. Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Spokane is currently the only authentic Brazilian Jiu-jitsu school in the Spokane area. Black Belt Instructor, Bart Smith and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Spokane are authorized affiliates for Rigan Machado, certified Black Belt under Gracie Barra Owner and International BJJ Federation President, Carlos Gracie Jr.

What are the classes like? Is it dangerous?

Despite it's reputation as a Vale Tudo style, Jiu-jitsu is actually a gentle art that allows you to control your opponent in the most humane possible way, or to use a series of more aggressive, punishing attacks. Our team members always train with respect and safety in mind. The class environment is challenging and competitive, but we don't allow bad attitudes, so leave your ego at the door! Come by our school, located at 1506 E. Francis Ave., just east of Nevada, right next to Enterprise Rent-a-Car. Your first week is free and at no obligation. Call (509) 217-3138 for more info. We'll see you on the mat!

What is Vale Tudo?

Vale Tudo means "Anything Goes," a style of fighting competition developed by the Gracie Family that allows full-contact, no-holds-barred techniques, with virtually no rules. This blood sport was introduced for the first time to the U.S. in 1993, in an event called the Ultimate Fighting Championships. Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Spokane offers Vale Tudo training as part of it's standard curriculum.
